Overview

The Lower Dolpo Trek is a breathtaking journey through one of Nepal’s most remote and untouched regions. This trek takes you through stunning landscapes, deep valleys, and traditional Tibetan villages. The highlight of the trek is the beautiful Phoksundo Lake, known for its crystal-clear blue waters. The region is also home to rare wildlife, including the snow leopard and blue sheep.

Organized by Monviso Trek, this adventure allows you to explore the rich culture and traditions of the Dolpo people. The trek passes through villages where locals still follow ancient Buddhist and Bon practices. You will also visit Ringmo Village, a traditional Tibetan settlement near Phoksundo Lake. The unique lifestyle of the people and their warm hospitality make this trek an unforgettable experience.

The trek involves crossing high mountain passes, such as Numa La (5,190m) and Bagala La (5,170m), offering spectacular views of the Dhaulagiri and Kanjirowa ranges. The landscapes change from lush green forests to arid highlands, creating a diverse and beautiful trekking route. Though challenging, the trek is suitable for experienced trekkers looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Since Lower Dolpo is a restricted area, a special permit is required. Monviso Trek handles all permits and logistics, ensuring a smooth and stress-free journey. The best time to do this trek is during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is stable, and the views are at their best.

If you are looking for a remote and culturally rich trekking experience, the Lower Dolpo Trek is a perfect choice. With expert guidance from Monviso Trek, you can enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime adventure in one of Nepal’s most fascinating regions.

Itinerary

You will arrive in Kathmandu, where a representative from Monviso Trek will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to your hotel. You can rest and explore the city. In the evening, we will have a briefing about the trek.

We take a short flight to Nepalgunj, a city in western Nepal. This is a warm place near the Indian border. You can explore the town or relax at the hotel.

We take an early morning flight to Juphal, the starting point of our trek. From Juphal, we walk for about 3 hours to Dunai, a small town on the banks of the Thuli Bheri River.

We follow the river trail through deep gorges and beautiful villages. We pass through terraced fields and cross several suspension bridges before reaching Tarakot, a historical village with an ancient fortress.

The trail today takes us through narrow valleys and along the Tarap River. We walk through pine forests and rocky landscapes before reaching Laini Odar, where we camp for the night.

We continue our trek through rugged terrain, crossing wooden bridges and climbing up steep trails. The landscape becomes more remote as we approach Nawarpani, where we stay overnight.

Today, we enter the wide valley of Tarap. The trail gradually ascends, and we start to see Tibetan-style houses and Buddhist monasteries. Dho Tarap is one of the highest settlements in the region, with a unique culture influenced by Tibet.

We take a rest day to adjust to the altitude. You can explore the village, visit monasteries, and interact with the local people, who follow Bon and Tibetan Buddhism.

We continue trekking through high-altitude pastures, where we see yaks and blue sheep grazing. The trail gradually ascends towards Numa La Base Camp, where we camp before crossing the high pass.

Today is one of the toughest days as we cross Numa La Pass. The steep climb offers breathtaking views of the Dhaulagiri range. After reaching the top, we descend to Danighar.

Another challenging day as we climb Baga La Pass. From the top, we get stunning views of snow-capped peaks. We then descend to Yak Kharka, a pastureland used by local herders.

We walk towards the beautiful Phoksundo Lake, one of the highlights of the trek. The turquoise blue lake is surrounded by cliffs and forests, creating a stunning view. We stay at Ringmo, a nearby village.

We take a day to explore Phoksundo Lake and visit the nearby Bon monastery. The peaceful environment and the beauty of the lake make this a perfect place to relax.

We begin our descent through forests and along the river. The trek becomes easier as we lose altitude. We reach Chhepka, a small village where we spend the night.

We continue walking through forests and terraced fields before reaching Juphal. This is our last trekking day. We celebrate the successful trek with our team.
